Michael A. Heck – Michigan Workers’ Compensation Attorney

Charters Law is proud to announce the return of Michael A. Heck as an attorney in the firm. Michael Heck grew up in Lincoln Park, Michigan. His father worked in an automobile plant and his mother was a homemaker. While growing up, Michael delivered pizzas, pumped gas, washed cars, roofed houses, painted cars, rebuilt car engines, and otherwise engaged in a wide variety of physical jobs. After two years of college Michael ran out of money and got a job at General Motors’ Fleetwood Fisher Body plant where he worked on the assembly line for just under two years. Michael Heck is very familiar with hands-on, physical labor.

Michael Heck eventually returned to school and received a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree from Michigan State University. He then attended the University of Michigan Law School where he attained his Juris Doctorate. After graduating law school, Michael Heck initially worked for a large corporate law firm but soon realized that serving large corporations did not provide the satisfaction he sought. Michael longed to help individuals, like the friends and coworkers he knew growing up.

In 1987, Michael Heck left corporate law and joined with John Charters, his brother-in-law, to create the law firm Charters Heck & O’Donnell. For the next 32 years Michael represented injured individuals in a wide variety of cases, including automobile accidents, construction site accidents, and workers’ compensation matters. In 2019 Governor Whitmer asked Michael Heck to assume the role as a workers’ compensation Magistrate. He accepted the appointment and for seven years oversaw countless workers’ compensation cases as an administrative law judge. Eventually, however, his love of helping injured individuals drew him back to private practice. In March 2026, Michael Heck resigned his position as a Magistrate and rejoined his old firm which is now called Charters Law.

Michael Heck is widely regarded as an excellent attorney. For over 27 years Martindale Hubbell, the largest and most prestigious organization that rates attorneys, has rated Michael Heck AV Preeminent, the highest rating possible for both legal talent and ethical conduct. Michael also has been listed as one of the best attorneys in Michigan by Detroit Business Magazine, Leading Lawyers and Hour Magazine. Michael Heck is also a member of the Million Dollar Forum and the Multi-Million Dollar Forum due to his large recoveries, including $3 Million in a wrongful death case and $4.1 Million in a construction site accident case.

Michael Heck is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan and a lifetime member of the NAACP. He is currently involved in a variety of local charities.
